After Last Season (2009)
Announcement
Have you ever seen the 2004 film Primer? It's an ultra low budget film (it was literally made for $7000) about the accidental discovery of time travel. According to Wikipedia, it "is noted for its extremely low budget, experimental plot structure, philosophical implications, and complex technical dialogue, which Carruth, a college graduate with a degree in mathematics and a former engineer, chose not to simplify for the sake of the audience." If you haven't seen it, it's beautiful and brilliant, and I highly recommend it. We're not watching Primer tonight, though. I'm far too cruel for that. Instead we are going to watch another independent scifi drama, this one from 2009 called AFTER LAST SEASON. It's not about time travel, but it seems to be aiming for the same complexity and thought provoking ideas that Primer did. It...uh...doesn't quite make it. After the trailer debuted people suspected that it wasn't, couldn't be a real film, and a popular theory was that it was a bit of viral marketing by Spike Jonze for his upcoming Where the Wild Things Are. According to the writer/producer/director Mark Region the budget was $5m but I'm not sure where the money went. You'll understand when you see it. I have been looking for a decent copy of this for a while now, and found a 1080p HD upscaled version of it, so that's what were going with tonight. Be prepared, this is gonna be an experience. See ya at 6:30!
