Cobra (1986)
Announcement
I started doing some research into tonight's movie so I could give you a sense of the background of it, but it quickly turned into a vortex of crazy. It's worth retelling, so apologies for the length. Here's kind of a short version: the late producer Don Simpson wanted to make an action movie about a tough cop from Pittsburgh who moves to LA-- it was originally titled Beverly Drive. It was rewritten to add humor to it. They signed Mickey Rourke to star and gave a $400k holding fee. It took too long and he bailed for another movie. The movie then went to Sylvester Stallone, who rewrote the whole movie himself, loosely basing it on a novel. This version spent way too much time (according to Simpson) with Stallone "soaping down his muscles" and would cost a fortune to make, so Simpson got Stallone to leave the movie by getting him a spot with an exclusive Swiss doctor who was injecting rich men with sheep hormones to give them bigger penises. They then signed Eddie Murphy to the role, which was rewritten to make it funny again, and that movie was Beverly Hills Cop. Stallone used the free time to make Rhinestone (which we watched in May 2022) and then took his version of the script and turned it into tonight's movie, COBRA, which was released in 1986. The same book was later made into another movie, 1995's Fair Game, which was supposed to make Cindy Crawford a movie star but ended up being hot garbage (maybe we should watch that one too at some point). Phew! The 80s were wild, man. See ya tonight at 6:30 for COBRA!
