When I was a kid, we used to only have basic cable. I used to go over to my friend’s house to watch HBO, which in those days was mostly showing only movies, and during the day they showed some pretty bottom of the barrel stuff. However, they weren’t edited like the movies on basic cable and network TV, so you hear the cursing and could see all of the violence and gore (and of course, most importantly, the boobies). I was a relatively innocent kid, and so I remember the goriest thing I ever saw was a movie called GYMKATA (I seem to remember someone getting a spear through the stomach? And a lot of blood). Decades later and Gymkata has become a full fledged cult movie. Real life Olympic gymnast (in what is clearly his first acting role) is recruited by a fake version of the CIA (the SIA) to go fight in a competition on a fictional nation called Parmistan. To quote the Wikipedia description of the plot: “If a person wins, then they are granted their life and a wish. The SIA wants Cabot to win the game so that he can use his wish to install a US satellite monitoring station, which could monitor all satellites in space and act as an early warning system in case of nuclear attack. Cabot is told that the system could save millions of lives. As an extra incentive, Cabot is also told that his father (who went missing) was actually a SIA operative who was sent to play the game but was never heard from again… Gymkata earned a Razzie Award nomination for Thomas as Worst New Star. It has developed a minor cult following as an unintentional comedy for its dubious premise, poor production quality and strange setting.” So come revisit my childhood with me! From what I understand, the movie is pretty tame as far as basically everything goes, so don’t let my childhood impression spoil a good time. It’s available for rent on Amazon. See ya at 6:30!
