Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night 2 (1987)
Announcement
Sequels, amirite? We’ve got Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Aliens, The Godfather Part 2…sometimes they enrich and surpass the original, adding nuance and depth to an already existing world. However, sometimes we get lucky and get sequels that have nothing to do with the original at all other than their titles. We’ve already watched Troll 2 and Grizzly II, and tonight for Halloween weekend we will be watching another beloved entry into this very dubious genre: 1987's HELLO MARY LOU: PROM NIGHT 2. The original PROM NIGHT starred Jamie Lee Curtis and Leslie Nielsen and was a cult horror classic. This “sequel” stars Michael Ironside (who is one of my favorite character actors) and absolutely nobody else that I’ve ever heard of (including a guy named Brock Simpson!). Directed by a guy most famous for this movie and written by a guy who is also most famous for this movie (and who apparently directed the extensive reshoots the movie underwent), this movie has been described as “An amalgamation of national tax shelter weirdness, brazen borrowing from better films, and the tossing of creative caution to the wind, Pittman’s picture evokes numerous classics while indubitably carving its own identity.” I’m excited because I’ve never seen it and it’s been on my list for years. It’s not on Amazon, but is available for rent on YouTube, Google Play, whatever Microsoft’s movie rental thing is called and Apple TV (and is streaming on a ton of other platforms but most have ads-- you can see the full list here: https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/hello-mary-lou-prom-night-ii. See you at 6:30 for some spooky fun!
