Howard The Duck (1986)
Announcement
If you didn’t know, I’m a big Marvel nerd, and have been since I was 12. The era of Marvel movies beginning with Iron Man might have become tiresome for some, but I have loved (almost) all of them (Looking at you, Avengers: Age of Ultron) and feel the quality and originality of them has only improved as they’ve gone on. It wasn’t always that way, though-- the movies I had to watch growing up to get my Marvel fix make Avengers: Age of Ultron look like Avengers: Endgame in comparison. And so as it goes, I want to share/inflict them on you! Tonight we begin a long planned series I’m calling the Shitty MCU: Marvel movies made before Marvel owned their own IP (which they sold when they were going through bankruptcy in the early 90s), or movies made because famous people wanted them made, or even one that was made just to keep the rights from reverting back to Marvel. Tonight we will begin this series with (believe it or not) the very first Marvel movie. Universal Studios had turned down Star Wars and was desperate to get into business with George Lucas. Lucas was a fan of the excellent comic book by Steve Gerber and thought it would transition well to film. He had the screenplay written by his friends Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz (who had written the critically acclaimed and financially successful American Graffiti, Industrial Light and Magic do the special fx and the other writer of American Graffiti (and script doctor on Star Wars as well as writing credit on Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) William Huyck direct. What we got was a movie that was ultimately very important, as it was such a failure that Lucas had to sell off some of his assets, including The Graphics Group, which Steve Jobs bought and renamed Pixar. Tonight, we watch Howard the Duck. It’s available for rent on Amazon and Apple TV for $4 (oddly, it’s about the only Marvel movie NOT on Disney+). 6:30 tonight!
