Lifeforce (1985)
Announcement
Space Vampires. Now that’s a good title for a movie. Weirdly enough though, Cannon Films thought it sounded too cheesy and retitled director Tobe Hooper’s 1985 film Lifeforce to make it sound more prestigious. I mean, the guy had just directed Poltergeist, which was a huge hit. This was going to be their trip to the big time. The screenplay was by Dan O’Bannon, who had written Alien. The music was by Henry Mancini. The budget? $25 million dollars. Starring Steve Railsback, most famous for the film The Stunt Man (which is a pretty good movie, not gonna lie) and for playing Charles Manson in the TV film of Helter Skelter, Academy Award nominee Peter Finch, Academy Award nominee Frank Finlay, and Patrick Stewart, who needs no introduction, Lifeforce is about SPACE VAMPIRES on Earth. Described by the New York Times’s Janet Maslin as “[I]ts style is shrill and fragmented enough to turn Lifeforce into hysterical vampire porn,” and by Leonard Maltin as “completely crazy…ridiculous, but so bizarre, it’s fascinating.” How can we go wrong? Full warning, apparently the lead vampire is a woman who is naked for the entire film, so if that’s an issue you might want to skip this one. It’s streaming for free on Prime. 6:30 tonight!
