There’s snow everywhere, so it seems appropriate to do a snowy movie! Has there ever been a director with higher highs and lower lows than John Frankenheimer? He directed the Manchurian Candidate, Seconds, and Ronin, amongst other classics. However, he also directed the Island of Doctor Moreau remake (which has been on my list for a while now) and tonight’s feature presentation, REINDEER GAMES, which stars Ben Affleck (at the height of his 90s/2k fame, Charlize Theron (who told Esquire in 2007 that it was the worst movie she’s ever did, saying that “Reindeer Games was not a good movie, but I did it because I loved John Frankenheimer,” Gary Sinise, Danny Trejo and Donal Logue (who replaced Vin Diesel in the role!). Roger Ebert wrote about the film: “”Reindeer Games” is the first All Talking Killer picture. After the setup, it consists mostly of characters explaining their actions to one another. I wish I’d had a stopwatch, to clock how many minutes are spent while one character holds a gun to another character’s head and gabs. Charlize Theron and Gary Sinise between them explain so much they reminded me of Gertrude Stein’s line about Ezra Pound: “He was a village explainer, excellent if you were a village, but if you were not, not.“” It’s streaming on HBO and available for rent on Amazon and the usual places. Description
