Robocop 3 (1993)
Announcement
Robocop is rightfully hailed as a cinematic masterpiece-- it created a template for satiric depictions of dystopia that are still being used today. So what happens when you make a sequel to it, but don’t bring back Paul Verhooven, the visionary director of it? You get a movie directed by the guy who directed The Empire Strikes Back (which is good) and written by Frank Miller (yes, THE Frank Miller who wrote the Dark Knight Returns and Sin City) and find out why what works in a comic DOESN’T work on screen (which is bad). So that’s Robocop 2. We’re not watching that. Instead, we are watching the third entry in the series, ROBOCOP 3, which was also co-written by Miller, and co-wrote and directed by the guy who made The Monster Squad (a movie that I love but also recognize is not very good). Peter Weller doesn’t return as Murphy (he was sick of wearing the suit which was apparently excruciatingly hot and uncomfortable. It’s also PG-13, which seems absurd when you think about it for a Robocop movie. Are you ready for diminishing returns? It’s available for rent on Amazon! See you at 6:30!
