Announcement

I don't know if you're familiar with the game series Fallout, but it's one of my favorites. I've spent literally thousands of hours exploring the irradiated post apocalyptic wastelands of America. They made a show out of it on Amazon, and I'm shocked to report it is 99.99% faithful to not only the spirit of the game, but also to the look and feel (seriously, the set design and prop departments deserve awards). After this show (which we're almost finished with, so NO SPOILERS) and The Last of Us on MAX it seems that production companies are realizing that making major departures from the games kind of ruins the fun of an adaptation. Until recently, I don't think a single game adaptation was EVER faithful to the games-- we've watched a few of these, like Street Fighter, Double Dragon, Mortal Kombat: Annhilation, etc and they are uniformly awful. The granddaddy of them all is tonight's movie, 1993's SUPER MARIO BROS. It took the simple story of two brothers who are trying to rescue a princess by stepping on turtles and mushrooms and fighting a sorta dragon and made it into...I dunno, cyberpunk? It's fucking wild. They took big swings with this movie, and they struck out with absolutely everything barring the casting of the late Bob Hoskins, who was perfectly cast as Mario. Also starring John Leguizamo, Samantha Mathis and Dennis Hopper (and Fiona Shaw! and Mojo Nixon!) this movie feels like a bad acid trip, which means it's perfect for tonight!
