We lost Val Kilmer this week. I was always a fan, probably because the first movie I ever saw him in was Willow, so he was always Madmartigan for me. He could be a tremendous dramatic actor (he was great in Heat) and was hilarious in Top Secret and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. However, we here at Bad Movie Theater have little interest in quality movies. We only want disasters. Fortunately for us, he was in a little movie called THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU in 1996, based on the novel by HG Wells. To call production a shitshow would be too kind. Bruce Willis dropped out of the lead role due to his divorce with Demi Moore. Kilmer joined, but only allowed a limited window of time for his participation. Marlon Brando as usual refused to learn his lines and required them to be fed to him in an earpiece, otherwise he'd just improvise them (Brando's daughter passed away before production, leading him to hide out on HIS private island and production had no idea when or if he'd actually show up). The studio tried to give the movie to Roman Polanski despite it having been developed over years by Richard Stanley, whose ancestor Col. Kurtz of Heart of Darkness (the source for Apocalypse Now) was based on. With Brando's backing, Stanley got to direct the movie, for three days at least. Kilmer was a huge asshole on set (he had just learned HIS wife was divorcing him) and didn't get along with anyone. Co-star Rob Morrow quit because the tension was so terrible to be around. Stanley was fired and the studio brought in John Frankenheimer to replace him. The studio worried that Stanley would sneak back and sabotage the film. He actually DID sneak back, and secretly ended up in the film as an extra. Holy cow, there's just so much more (there's a documentary about the shoot if you're interested), but I'm out of room here. Let's just say the shoot didn't go well and went wildly over budget. Can't wait to finally see this thing. See ya tonight!
